According to Ayurveda, there are three types of the human body, also known as Doshas. Before we jump into details about body types. Let us have a look at some other aspects of the human body to understand body types in a better way.
We cannot control the weather or any other natural activity, but we can take the correct right precaution so these changes will not harm our doshas. Precautions such as we can dress properly according to weather, everyone should be smart enough to remember the previous history of any kind of food which causes stomachache or any other health issue.
The human body is designed by four aspects, these aspects need to be in balance to maintain a good healthy life – these are the Doshas, the Dhatus, Agni, and Malas.
Three doshas are VATA, PITTA, KAPHA. These doshas are the energies created by any combination of five elements (Air, Space, Fire, Earth, Water) and can be found in everybody, but the different people have more of some doshas than other, that define their body type.

Doshas – are the energies present in body and mind, the balance of these three doshas is the health and allows the body to work effectively.
Dhatu – Seven dhatus are also known as tissues and they form the physical nature of the body. Balance doshas help dhatus to build healthier tissue.
Agni – Agni refers to the digestive energy of the body, healthy agni helps the body to digest food so the body can build strong tissues. Agni also helps the body to prevent ama.
Malas – extraction of urine, sweat, and stool in timely manner keeps the body balanced and healthy.
Three Types of Body according to Ayurveda –
Vata is always a sign of movement, mobility, and dryness. Vata is made up of the air and earth elements. Air provides a quality of movement to this dosha. All the movements and sensation in the body such as blood circulation is due to Vata dosha and it seats in the colon.
Some functions of Vata –
- When Vata is in a balanced state, it promotes a feeling of freshness, joy, happiness, creativity, and flexibility.
- Vata out of balance promotes, fear, nervousness, and anxiety.
- Vata is dry, cold, light, mobile, mobile, and dispersing.
- Digestive and absorption of nutrition are common problems for Vata dosha.
Pitta is made up of fire and water elements, it has the energy of heating and metabolism. Pitta governs all the chemical changes takes place in our body such as digestion, absorption, and body temperature.
Some function of Pitta –
- When pitta is in balance, it promotes creativity, understanding, and hunger for learning but when it is in imbalance state it promotes frustration, anger, criticism, and jealousy.
- Pitta is hot, sharp, light, and liquid.
- The main seat of the pitta is in the stomach and small intestine.
Kapha is a dosha of earth and water element and it supplies the liquid needed for our cells. It helps in maintaining immunity, moisturize the skin, and helps to heal the wounds.
Some functions of Kapha –
- Qualities of Kapha are slow, cool, heavy, smooth, and soft.
- When Kapha is in balance, it promotes love, forgiveness, and calmness and when it is in imbalance state it promotes emotional attachment, greed, and lust.
- The main seat of Kapha is stomach and chest.
Every human body have these three doshas present but all the doshas have different degrees in body and dosha with high degree decides body type.
To understand the principle of ayurvedic lifestyle and treatment it is important to understand the nature of body by understanding the dosha type of body based on body characteristics without identifying the dosha it is not possible to treat a patient by Ayurveda.
Note: When Ayurveda says health comes from balancing your doshas, this does not mean you should try to have equal amounts of Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. Rather, it means maintaining the balance with which you were conceived.
